MENTOR MOMENTS: It’s time to celebrate and reflect
Happy May! This time of every school year is filled with celebrations and reminiscence of accomplishments and achievements. It also is a time when teachers begin reflecting about their practices and start setting goals for the next year. Working with resident educators in establishing and embedding good practices offers opportunity for professional growth for teachers at all levels. Genuine feedback about growth and successes from the year are valuable and will allow resident educators to feel acknowledged. It is also very valuable to share the process of self-reflection and personal goal setting. When mentors model how to identify professional goals and the steps for accomplishing them, teachers learn early in their careers to expect continual formative reviews of their performance and practices. We suggest that mentors give quality feedback supported with examples from the year and that they work together with resident educators to create their goals for next year.
