Students can learn how they can help prevent older adults from falling
Falls are the leading cause of emergency room visits, hospitalizations and deaths for older Ohioans. Since young children are uniquely positioned to point out fall risks to their older loved ones, the Ohio Department of Aging’s STEADY U Ohio initiative created the “Don’t Fall for Me, Valentine!” toolkit for classrooms.
Teachers may want to use Valentine’s Day to begin talking to young students about how they can help prevent the older adults they know from experiencing dangerous falls. Materials include a lesson plan, coloring and puzzle pages, and Valentine’s Day cards with fall-prevention tips. Students can color the cards to share with loved ones or collect the cards for delivery to a nursing home or senior center.
