Will your district be represented in the 2018 Ohio Teacher of the Year program? New route to nomination now available

The Ohio Teacher of the Year program is more than a way to recognize exceptional teachers statewide. It’s also a means of giving teachers a voice, empowering them to take part in critical, decision-marking conversations affecting students, teachers and public education. For the 2018 program, there are more ways than ever before to nominate candidates for the regional selection of State Board District Teachers of the Year. It all starts at the regional level.

​Roster verification begins April 19 for teachers

In school districts participating in roster verification, teachers who have value-added data from courses for which there are state tests will receive an email April 19. The message will help them begin their part of roster verification, in which they will claim instructional responsibility for the students they taught, how long they taught them and the percentage of instruction they provided each student. This effort will result in value-added reports in the fall that will be part of 2017-2018 teacher evaluations. The teachers will have from April 19 through May 9 to verify their rosters, which their principals must approve by May 25.

Coaching permit holders have a new requirement

As part of new state requirements from Ohio Senate Bill 252 (Lindsay’s Law), all individuals who coach athletic activities must annually complete a sudden cardiac arrest course approved by the Ohio Department of Health. In early May, that department is expected to announce a new course for fulfilling this requirement. When training is available, the Ohio Department of Education will notify districts, encouraging them to have coaches complete the course as soon as possible.
