Department seeks educators to help define standard setting for state tests in science and social studies

The Ohio Department of Education is currently accepting applications for educators who wish to participate in meetings Aug. 6-7 in Columbus for the purpose of conducting performance level-setting for state tests in science and social studies. The state tests to be discussed will include grades 4 and 6 social studies; grades 5 and 8 science; and high school Biology, American Government, American History and Physical Science. Interested educators must submit applications by 5 p.m. on Friday, May 29.

Register now for credentialed evaluator training sessions

Educators who wish to become credentialed evaluators for the Ohio Teacher Evaluation System may select one of the required three-day training sessions that begin in June. In addition to completing this training, educators who meet the qualifications for serving as evaluators hold current educator licenses, are approved by their education agencies as evaluators and have passed an online credentialing assessment.

New opportunity available for value-added leaders and teachers

Applications are now available for Ohio principals, assistant principals and teachers to serve as value-added leaders. The Ohio Department of Education, with support from Battelle for Kids, is announcing the selection, development and credentialing of a regionally selected group of school leaders for understanding and using value-added measures. Principals, assistant principals – as well as teachers – who have experience using this data to inform school improvement efforts are encouraged to apply for these leadership opportunities to improve data literacy among Ohio’s school leaders.

Teachers to begin roster verification April 15

In the early hours of WednNowesday, April 15, each teacher with value-added data at participating districts received an email message from the district’s value-added service provider that gives them access to verify rosters through May 12. These teachers will set up attribution for the students they taught, how long they taught them and the percentage of instruction they provided each student. Principals may review and approve rosters as they are completed during the teacher roster verification period and continue doing so through June 5.

Items on Kindergarten Readiness Assessment reduced

In his January 2015 report on state tests, Superintendent of Public Instruction Dr. Richard A. Ross pledged to make changes to the new Kindergarten Readiness Assessment to reduce disruption to classroom instruction. Upon feedback and recommendations from Ohio teachers, the department is reducing the number of items on the assessment by 21 percent. The revision ensures that the results are reliable and helpful in guiding instruction.

Safe harbor extended to students

The governor has signed House Bill 7 to ensure that students receive the same safe harbor protections granted to school districts and teachers this year. As Ohio transitions to new state tests, safe harbor gives schools, teachers and now students time to adjust. In most cases, there will no longer be consequences tied to the results of state tests given in the 2014-2015 school year. Safe harbor for state tests given during the 2014-2015 school year affect consequences in the 2015-2016 school year.

Third-grade teachers may receive free seed packets for Earth Day

The Ohio Nursery and Landscape Association is offering a limited number of third-grade classrooms free Sweet Basil seed packets in conjunction with the Plant Something campaign’s observance of Earth Day on Wednesday, April 22. Information about planting the seeds is available here.
