Third-grade teachers may receive free seed packets for Earth Day

The Ohio Nursery and Landscape Association is offering a limited number of third-grade classrooms free Sweet Basil seed packets in conjunction with the Plant Something campaign’s observance of Earth Day on Wednesday, April 22. Information about planting the seeds is available here.

Free workshop on adapted physical education planned for May 4

Information and important updates about implementing adapted physical education in your district or school are the agenda of a free workshop on Monday, May 4. The location of the one-day workshop is the Ohio State School for the Blind, 5220 N. High St., Cols. 43214. The Office of Exceptional Children at the Ohio Department of Education and the Ohio State School for the Blind are sponsors of the event. Registration is open through STARS using your SAFE Account. The registration deadline is Wednesday, April 29, and there is space for 75 participants. Start Talking! is an initiative that gives parents, guardians, educators and community leaders the tools to start the conversation with Ohio’s youth about the importance of living healthy, drug-free lives. A parent education program, TEACHable Moments for the classroom, information tools, and evidence-based interventions for schools and communities are among the Start Talking programs that will build youth resiliency.

Third Grade Reading Guarantee and Early Literacy regional meetings – register now

The Ohio Department of Education is hosting five Third Grade Reading Guarantee regional meetings in March and April 2015 to learn strategies to support early literacy. Districts and schools may register now for a one-day meeting – Mar. 23, Independence; Mar. 25, Sharonville; Mar. 26, Archbold; April 13, Zanesville; and April 16, Delaware. Registration and agenda topics are available in STARS, keyword Third Grade Reading Guarantee, Connect the Dots. Districts and schools are encouraged to send a team that includes, but is not limited to, the superintendent, curriculum director, elementary administrators, K-3 teachers, literacy coaches and intervention specialists.

Comments requested for drafted K-3 learning and development standards

The Ohio Department of Education’s Office of Early Learning and School Readiness is inviting review and comment through April 6 on newly drafted learning and development standards for children in kindergarten through grade 3. The standards address the following areas: approaches toward learning; physical well-being; and social-emotional development. Teachers will begin value-added roster verification April 15; more teachers will be involved this year

The school set-up period for value-added roster verification begins March 23 for principals and their support teams in districts that have chosen to participate in this process. Administrators have until April 14 to verify their staff lists and assignments before the teacher review period begins. On April 15, each teacher with value-added data at participating districts will receive an email message from the district’s value-added service provider that gives them access to verify rosters through May 12. These teachers will set up attribution for the students they taught, how long they taught them and the percentage of instruction they provided each student. The workshops will provide both current, experienced advanced placement teachers and those seeking to teach these courses with in-depth content and resources to enhance their teaching at all levels.
