The 2014 schedule of required trainings is now beginning for educators who are interested in becoming certified mentors for the Ohio Resident Educator program. Experienced mentors looking for more tools and resources for working with beginning teachers will benefit from the advanced mentor training that is offered as well.

Know! campaign offers content for TEACHable Moments

The most recent installment of an ongoing series called TEACHable Moments, part of the KNOW! campaign, focuses on the relationship between family history and alcohol dependency. The Know! program, part of an Ohio-focused drug prevention initiative called Start Talking!, is designed to give adult authority figures the tools they need to help kids resist drugs.

Ohio Students Field Test Next Generation Assessments

Ohio took the first step last week toward ensuring all students leave school ready for college and careers when field tests began for Ohio’s Next Generation Assessments. The new computer-based tests will replace the Ohio Achievement Assessments during the 2014-2015 school year and will eventually replace the Ohio Graduation Test.

If your district is participating in roster verification of 2013-2014 Value-Added data, know that the teacher portion of the process will run from April 16 through May 13. Start Talking! offers teaching resources adaptable for many grades

Because children who talk with their parents, teachers and other authority figures about drugs are 50 percent less likely to use them, the new statewide initiative titled Start Talking! is providing communication tools through the Know! program to help with these short but important conversations. Find out about guides titled TEACHable Moments and the Parents 360Rx education program. Although primarily targeted at middle school students, these resources are adaptable for many grade levels.

Criminal background check updates required for educators who have permanent and non-tax certificates

Educators who hold permanent certificates and permanent non-tax certificates are required by state law to update their FBI criminal background checks every five years through the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation (BCI). Because this law was put into place five years ago, educators holding these certificates need to update the background checks when they expire this year, if they have not already done so. As permitted in law, on July 1, 2014, the Ohio Department of Education will begin inactivating permanent certificates of individuals whose background checks have expired and were not updated.
