Learn about report card and Value-Added data at Ohio’s Measures workshops

A series of one-day regional training sessions are being held this fall to share information about Ohio’s Accountability System including local report card data, updated teacher value-added reports, the data behind the accountability system and how to use the data generated form the measures for school improvement. These training sessions are intended for district and building leaders, teacher leaders and others involved in the school/district improvement process. View the flyer posted here for dates and locations. Principal’s Toolkit offers resources teachers can use in parent communication

Your principal should have received a message regarding the department’s updated Principal’s Toolkit. This online service contains brief news articles, videos, fact sheets and other information to explain the changes in Ohio education for the 2014-2015 school year. Principals, teachers and other administrators can easily use these materials in meetings, curriculum nights and parent conferences. We hope you find the materials useful.

How to advance a resident educator license; recent law changes

To advance a resident educator license to a professional educator license, license holders must successfully complete the four-year Resident Educator Program including the Resident Educator Summative Assessment. One- or two-year extensions of resident educator licenses and alternative resident educator licenses will be available beginning in January 2015, for licenses that will be expiring June 30, 2015.

Electronic licensure credentials available to applicants and e-signers; mailing of paper formats to cease

In September, the Ohio Department of Education will cease mailing of newly issued paper licenses, certificates and permits. To make these important documents available electronically to educators and their employers, the department continues to work on improvements to the My Educator Profile online licensure system. One of the improvements allows any educator who has an “issued” or currently valid credential to download and save a copy of it in PDF format and print it from his or her own computer.

Beach Bags give parents an easy way to keep their children's reading skills sharp with fun summer activities arranged around five themes: weather, pets, transportation, food and neighborhoods. As school closes, here’s a discussion topic of interest to students

No doubt, your students are greatly anticipating the closing of school and the kickoff to summer. But as the novelty of summer break wears off, many young people may find themselves feeling isolated and alone, having lost the daily interactions and social connections that school provides. Such feelings can lead to unhealthy coping behaviors (including substance abuse) and increased risk for developing depression, anxiety and other mental health problems. In the latest addition to the TEACHable Moments series, the Know! campaign offers suggestions you can share with your students to help them make, keep and strengthen their social connections this summer.

Register for a free advanced placement June workshop

The department is offering a series of one-day workshops from June 16 to 25 in Toledo, Cincinnati and Columbus for high school teachers who are interested in refreshing and improving their teaching of advanced placement courses. The agenda will include teaching strategies for courses in U.S. history, government, physics, chemistry, statistics, English literature and Spanish.
