$10 million available through Ohio’s new school mentorship program

Community Connectors provides $10 million in 3-to-1 matching grants that will help give more Ohio students access to role models who can help motivate and inspire them, as well as help them develop skills that lead to success in school and the workplace. For details on applying for a grant, see a recorded webcast here. The Ohio Department of Education is accepting applications now through Feb. 20.

Learn more about how to use and develop varied assessment types

Educators can now access four sets of online resources within the Battelle for Kids Ohio portal related to “assessment literacy,” or the ability to select and design high-quality assessments. The professional development materials are appropriate for all educators but are especially helpful for those developing measures of student growth through student learning objectives.

OhioMeansJobs K-12 offers materials to share with students

Resources are now available to help your school promote OhioMeansJobs K-12. State law requires schools to share this education and career planning tool via newsletter and website by April 1, 2015. Whether you are a classroom teacher, school counselor, administrator, parent or community member, there are tools to  support you with helping students begin using OhioMeansJobs K-12.

Teacher evaluation guide offers professional development and resources

The department recently posted the new Ohio Teacher Evaluation System Resource Guide to help educators clarify and deepen their understanding of the Ohio Teacher Evaluation System process. The guide features suggested professional development activities that would span approximately one hour to a full day. It also includes resource bibliographies of books and websites on teacher evaluation and performance, evaluation methodology, student growth measures and coaching teachers in the classroom. The guide is posted on the department’s Teacher Evaluation Web page under the Resources heading.

Nominations for Presidential Awards for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching now open

The Presidential Awards for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching are the nation's highest honors for mathematics and science teachers. The program recognizes teachers for their contributions to instruction and learning, as well as their abilities to help students make progress in mathematics and science. Nominations are being accepted for teachers in grades 7-12 for the 2015 awards, now through April 1, 2015. For further information, go to PAEMST awards.

Lori Michalec of Tallmadge is Ohio Teacher of the Year

Earlier this fall, State Superintendent of Public Instruction Dr. Richard A. Ross announced Akron-area resident Lori Michalec as the Ohio Teacher of the Year at a surprise assembly at Tallmadge High School in Tallmadge.
