Third Grade Reading Guarantee webcast for educators is May 16

On Friday, May 16, from 10 a.m. to noon, the Ohio Department of Education will host its next webcast on the Third Grade Reading Guarantee. The webinar will include updates on guidance for individualized education program considerations, as well as information on intervention and remediation from literacy specialists. Training opens May 15 for teacher and principal evaluators to “re-calibrate” their credentials

If you are an administrator or teacher who became a credentialed evaluator during the past two years for either the Ohio Teacher or Principal Evaluation System, you will be able to renew your designation beginning May 15 by successfully completing training and a test. The National Institute for Excellence in Teaching, which administered the original credentialing for the Ohio Department of Education, also developed the required re-calibration training and tests for each designation. To ensure that you will have online access to the training and test, and will receive electronic communications from the National Institute for Excellence in Teaching, take steps now to verify that you can login to the institute’s website.

Ohio World Language Teacher of the Year selected

Alan Turner has been selected as the Ohio World Language Teacher of the Year. He has taught French and Spanish at Saint Ignatius High School in Cleveland since 1987. Turner has been an active Ohio Foreign Language Association member since 1987 and has served as that organization’s executive treasurer since 2011.

OhioMeansJobs.com will host new site for students and families in the fall

Beginning fall 2014, OhioMeansJobs K-12 will replace the Ohio Career Information System. Part of the state’s premiere job and résumé bank, the site is available at no cost to all Ohio schools, families and citizens. It offers comprehensive, career development tools, online training and resources specifically for students and teachers. All schools can take advantage of the online information sessions available through May. If your district currently uses the Ohio Career Information System, please direct students to print or save their information before July 1, 2014.

Grades 7-12 teachers invited to learn more about Holocaust education on June 26

In a day-long program on June 26 titled Echoes and Reflections, teachers will explore how to teach about the Holocaust, as well as other episodes of genocide in history. In addition to the training, in-person and virtual attendees will receive the Echoes and Reflections multimedia curriculum, as well as access to lesson plans, primary sources, handouts, photographs and video testimonials. A Holocaust survivor will be among several speakers at this event, which will be held at Walsh University in North Canton.

June Academy offers month-long selection of online and in-person professional development

The Educational Service Center of Central Ohio is hosting a wide variety of learning opportunities during the June Academy. Face-to-face and online options will be available. Select from multi-day, mini-academy options, single-day or half-day options. Topics will include performance task design, project-based learning and the Common Core State Standards. There also is a graduate credit option.
