How to advance a resident educator license; recent law changes

To advance a resident educator license to a professional educator license, license holders must successfully complete the four-year Resident Educator Program including the Resident Educator Summative Assessment. One- or two-year extensions of resident educator licenses and alternative resident educator licenses will be available beginning in January 2015, for licenses that will be expiring June 30, 2015.

Electronic licensure credentials available to applicants and e-signers; mailing of paper formats to cease

In September, the Ohio Department of Education will cease mailing of newly issued paper licenses, certificates and permits. To make these important documents available electronically to educators and their employers, the department continues to work on improvements to the My Educator Profile online licensure system. One of the improvements allows any educator who has an “issued” or currently valid credential to download and save a copy of it in PDF format and print it from his or her own computer.

Beach Bags offer fun reading activities for summer

Beach Bags give parents an easy way to keep their children's reading skills sharp with fun summer activities arranged around five themes: weather, pets, transportation, food and neighborhoods. Each themed online Beach Bag includes two free printable “little books,” two related activities, a list of classic picture books for further reading and suggested websites to explore.

As school closes, here’s a discussion topic of interest to students

No doubt, your students are greatly anticipating the closing of school and the kickoff to summer. But as the novelty of summer break wears off, many young people may find themselves feeling isolated and alone, having lost the daily interactions and social connections that school provides. Such feelings can lead to unhealthy coping behaviors (including substance abuse) and increased risk for developing depression, anxiety and other mental health problems. In the latest addition to the TEACHable Moments series, the Know! campaign offers suggestions you can share with your students to help them make, keep and strengthen their social connections this summer.

Register for a free advanced placement June workshop

The department is offering a series of one-day workshops from June 16 to 25 in Toledo, Cincinnati and Columbus for high school teachers who are interested in refreshing and improving their teaching of advanced placement courses. The agenda will include teaching strategies for courses in U.S. history, government, physics, chemistry, statistics, English literature and Spanish.

Free professional development available for world language teachers

Beginning June 11, the department is offering world language educators free professional development workshops on six different days this summer around Ohio. On each day, participants may participate in one or both of the timely sessions to be offered. Topics include Student Learning Objectives/Ohio Teacher Evaluation System and Instructional Best Practices for World Language Teachers.

Permanent certificates with expired background checks will be inactivated beginning July 1

Educators who hold permanent certificates and permanent non-tax certificates are required by state law to update their FBI criminal background checks every five years through the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation (BCI). As permitted in law, on July 1, 2014, the Ohio Department of Education will begin inactivating permanent certificates of individuals whose background checks have expired and were not updated. As a result, these educators will not be permitted to work in Ohio schools until they successfully update their background checks.
