Sign up now for free Ohio Digital Learning Day events on Feb. 5

Wednesday, Feb. 5, is Digital Learning Day 2014, a national campaign to spotlight successful instructional practice and effective use of technology. Teachers and students are encouraged to register to participate in statewide Digital Learning Day events that are all scheduled for Feb. 5, and also to take advantage of resources that will be available that day for future use.

Fifth-grade submissions to Amber Alert poster contest due Feb. 27

Schools now have until Feb. 27 (rather than the original Feb. 1 deadline) to submit state-level entries to the National Missing Children’s Day poster contest for fifth-grade students. Each school should submit their best poster to the Missing Children’s Clearinghouse of the Ohio Attorney General’s office, which will select a state winner to send to the national sponsor, the U.S. Department of Justice (USDOJ).

Spring Education Conference to be held March 28

Save March 28 for the free daylong Spring Education Conference that the Ohio Department of Education will hold at the Greater Columbus Convention Center. Among other topics, participants will learn more about selecting, developing and using assessments that can measure student growth. There also will be a half-day symposium for teachers, administrators, curriculum directors and other educators who want to know more about advanced placement.

Presidential award presented to two Ohio teachers

Two Ohio educators recently received the nation’s highest honors for mathematics and science teachers. Elizabeth Pitzer, a fifth-grade mathematics teacher in the Arcanum Butler Local Schools in Arcanum and Natalie Harr, an early childhood science teacher in Crestwood Local Schools in Mantau are among the 102 recipients of the Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching.

Apply by April 4 for teaching in Taiwan

Through a memorandum of understanding with Taiwan’s Ministry of Education, the Ohio Department of Education invites new and experienced licensed elementary and middle school teachers to apply to the Teaching in Taiwan program. The selected educators teach English to students in Taiwan for one academic year. Teaching contracts are from 10 to 11 months, depending on the placement.

Educator licensure process going paperless Jan. 1

Because the process for submitting and approving all educator licensure applications (initial licenses or renewals) is moving to a completely paperless system as of Jan. 1, any paper applications must be received by Dec. 31 to be processed. Thereafter, applicants and authorized electronic signers must complete the process online through My Educator Profile, the Ohio Department of Education’s online licensure application system.
