Applying for the HiSET Test

Reminder: All test takers for the GED® and HiSET must be an Ohio Resident.


Effective January 11, 2021, Online proctoring is available for the High School Equivalency Program.  The same guidelines are applicable for the online proctoring. 
  • All test takers must be Ohio residents, and are eligible for one voucher code per vendor;
  • Age requirements for test takers 16, 17, and 18 years of age remain the same; and,
  • Although HiSET At Home uses a different voucher code, test takers who have received a used a voucher code for the paper or online test, are not eligible for a new code.

Steps to apply for the HiSET Test:

1. Create an account on the HiSET website

2. Contact your local Career Technical Planning District (CTPD) Office in order to receive a state voucher code. Voucher codes are available and will expire June 30, 2024. Test takers are allowed only one voucher code per subtest for the HiSET test. Voucher codes must be applied to the initial subtest only. No shows will count against your voucher code. Contact GED if you miss a scheduled exam.

3. Test takers who are 18 years of age, must submit a current school year withdrawal form signed by a school official to:

4. Test takers who are 16 - 17 years of age, must submit a current school year withdrawal form  signed by a school official and the Department of Education signed/notarized parental consent form to:

5. Once the withdrawal form and/or parental consent form has been received by the office, the age approval will be entered into the HiSET system.

6. Test takers will log back into their HiSET account and complete the application process by scheduling the test, entering the voucher code and making the payment.

Voucher codes are available by contacting one of your local Career Technical Planning Districts Offices.

Price change effective 2021:

Computer-delivered tests:
$18.75 per subtest ($93.75 total cost prior to the voucher code)
Paper-delivered tests: $23.00 per subtest ($115.00 total cost prior to the voucher code)
Online Proctored tests: 28.25 per subtest ($141.25 total cost prior to voucher code)

Test takers: must be a resident of Ohio. Only first time test takers are eligible for a voucher code. All voucher codes expire on June 30, 2024.

Max score of 20
Passing score of 8 in each section
(Must also get a 2 out of 6 on the essay piece in Writing)
45 total points required to pass

HiSET Test subjects

The five subjects tested on the HiSET are Reading, Writing (with essay), Math (calc. optional; whole test), Science, and Social Studies.
