Advanced Placement and International Baccalaureate Fee Reimbursement Program

The Ohio Department of Education’s Advanced Placement and International Baccalaureate Fee Reimbursement Program provides financial support students from low-income families taking Advanced Placement and International Baccalaureate exams. Through a federal grant, the ODE aims to open accessibility, increase participation of low-income students in academically rigorous coursework in public and nonpublic schools and narrow the economic achievement gap. The AP/IB Test Fee program assists school districts with high numbers of minority and low-income students to transform their high schools into educational institutions where all students can be successful and prepared for a global economy and postsecondary education or certification. During the past eight years of the fee waiver program, Ohio has seen an increase in the number of students completing science, English, social sciences, computer and math Advanced Placement coursework and assessments. The Ohio Department of Education is committed to expanding Advanced Placement and International Baccalaureate opportunities equitably with an emphasis on addressing the needs of students from low-income families.

The U.S. Department of Education opened the application process for the Advanced Placement Test Fee Program on April 2, 2013. The Ohio Department of Education (ODE) is preparing an application for this grant for FY 2013 to cover a portion of the Advanced Placement and International Baccalaureate examination fees for low-income students. Although the federal money will cover most of the AP and IB tests, the ODE’s General Revenue Funds will supplement that balance so that all of the AP and IB fees for qualifying students from low-income families are covered. However, with the application deadline on June 3, 2013, there is a delay when the ODE will receive notification awarding the application.  Reimbursement is contingent on receiving the grant money.
