Supporting students with food allergies

Ohio law requires districts, community schools and nonpublic schools to establish a written policy to protect students with food allergies. This law encourages districts to train school personnel and provide age-appropriate instruction for students in grades K-12 on supporting students with food allergies. Ohio law provides guidelines for public schools, including community schools and nonpublic schools, on the procurement, distribution and training for the administration of epinephrine to treat allergic reactions caused by food allergies.

Food allergy policy requirements and resources to train staff and students, as well as information on the procurement of epinephrine autoinjectors, are available on the Department’s Supporting Students with Food Allergies and Food Allergy Policy Requirements and Guidance webpages. Ohio law also requires the Department to compile and share a list of organizations and companies that offer free and reduced-cost epinephrine autoinjectors.
