Free resources offer support for educators facing mental health challenges

11/22/2021

The Ohio departments of Education and Mental Health and Addiction Services recognize Ohio’s school professionals continue to face challenges every day. These challenges may cause added stress, anxiety, sadness or anger. Sometimes those emotions may result in behavioral changes like becoming more easily distracted, bored, sleeping or eating too little or too much or overindulging in alcohol or tobacco.

Individuals experiencing these challenges are not alone. Feelings like fear, anxiety, sadness, loss and anger are both valid and common. It’s important to be aware of and acknowledge these feelings and remember it’s OK to ask for help.

There are free resources available to help, including information about potential signs and symptoms of mental health issues or suicide. Physical health is vital, but mental health is equally important to educators, their loved ones and their profession.

  • The ABCs of Mental Health is a resource for educators who may be struggling with added stresses due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Developed by Ohio’s leading suicide prevention experts, these tips and tools were specifically tailored to teachers, administrators and school staff. The ABCs of Mental Health include:
    • Ask yourself how you’re feeling;
    • Be aware of signs and symptoms; and
    • Care for yourself and others.
  • The Crisis Text Line provides free, 24/7, text-based mental health support. Text “4hope” to 741-741 to connect with a crisis counselor.
  • The Ohio Careline at 1-800-720-9616 is a toll-free emotional support call service staffed by behavioral health professionals. They offer 24/7, confidential support for those in a personal or family crisis. When additional services are needed, the behavioral health professionals will provide the caller with assistance and connection to local providers.
