Medicaid eligibility changes

10/10/2023

More than half of all school children in the United States rely on Medicaid and Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP) for health coverage. The majority of children and youth still will be eligible for Medicaid and CHIP but need to act quickly to re-enroll and remain in coverage.

U.S. Secretary of Education Dr. Miguel A. Cardona’s Dear Colleague letter urges schools and districts to assist students and families with reenrollment in Medicaid to avoid losing medical coverage. Schools and districts can help students meet their physical and behavioral health needs by partnering with their local Medicaid agencies and assisting families with the application process when possible.

The U.S. Department of Education and Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services developed a two-page checklist for schools, districts and community leaders to help families navigate the Medicaid reenrollment process.
