Reminders and resources during National School Bus Safety Week

10/15/2025

NHTSA school bus information, safety resources

National School Bus Safety Week takes place Oct. 20-24, highlighting awareness of best practices that keep students safe outside of and near school buses. Schools can access School Bus Safety Week videos, graphics, and other resources for schools and districts to utilize on the U.S. Department of Transportation website.

Safety reminders for schools and bus drivers

The school bus loading and unloading area is called the “danger zone.” Specifically, this is any side of the bus where the bus driver can’t see the child and, therefore, the child is in the most danger. These areas include:

  • 10 feet in front of the bus, where the driver may be sitting too high to see a child

  • 10 feet on either side of the bus, where a child may be in the driver’s blind spots

  • Behind the school bus
Find more information about school bus stop safety on the National Highway and Traffic Safety Administration’s website.
