Jenny Shafer Kilgore was elected to the State Board of Education in November 2018, representing District 4. Her term began in January 2019 and will end in December 2022.
Jenny is a lifelong resident of Hamilton County. She graduated from Deer Park High School and earned a BS and master’s degree in education from Xavier University, as well as a doctorate in educational leadership from Miami University.
She teaches undergraduate education majors at Miami University and education graduate students at Indiana Wesleyan. She taught middle school English students for 15 years at Landmark Christian School.
Jenny has been an elected member of the Village of Glendale Council since 2004 and currently serves as the village’s vice mayor. She also is on the West Point Society, Cincinnati, board of directors; West Point Leadership & Ethics Seminar Planning Committee; The Freedoms Foundation at Valley Forge, Cincinnati Chapter; Mid-Western Educational Research Association board; and a variety of county committees that encourage collaboration and fiscal responsibility.
Her goals as a State Board member are to provide teachers with the tools they need to be effective and students the supports they need to be active learners. She especially is concerned with safe learning environments; education system fiscal responsibility; local control for districts strengthened by community and parent participation; and high-quality educational opportunities for students, including preparation for post-high school endeavors.
Jenny has been married to Timothy Stuart Kilgore, an architect, for 44 years. She has a daughter who earned her graduate degree from Washington University in St Louis, MO, and a son who earned his graduate degree at Harvard University in Cambridge, MA. Both were valedictorians at Landmark Christian School and graduates of The United States Military Academy at West Point in West Point, New York.
