Member At-Large

Melissa “Missy” Bedell was appointed to the State Board of Education as a member at-large by Gov. Mike DeWine in April 2022. Her term will end in December 2024.

She is an Ohio native, born and raised in Hamilton, Ohio. After graduating from Hamilton High School, she graduated from Wittenberg University and went on to graduate from the University of Dayton School of Law.

After passing the Ohio State Bar Exam, she practiced law for the Franklin County Public Defender’s Office. Her years at the Public Defender’s Office gave her a deep understanding of the importance of a quality education, igniting a desire for all Ohio children to have access to quality educational opportunities.

Since 2002, Missy has focused her time and energy on her family and community. She and her husband now live in Columbus, where her youngest daughter attends Bishop Hartley High School. Her oldest daughter currently attends Baldwin Wallace University. She has previously served as a member and president of the board of Columbus Montessori Education Center, was a member of The Childhood League for 6 years, and now volunteers her time with St. Catharine Church and Bishop Hartley High School.

Missy has a passion for early childhood education as a key foundation for strong primary and secondary school learning. She also believes that high school is an environment where teaching the whole child is just as important as covering state standards and believes Ohio’s education system has the potential to do just that.
