Candidate Profile

The State Superintendent of Public of Instruction is responsible for the administration of the Department which includes:

  • Administering the school funding system;
  • Collecting school fiscal and performance data;
  • Developing academic standards and model curricula;
  • Administering Ohio’s state achievement tests;
  • Issuing district and school report cards;
  • Administering Ohio’s voucher programs;
  • Monitoring educational service centers, other regional providers, early learning and childcare programs and private schools;
  • Providing technical and professional assistance and advice to all school districts in reference to all aspects of education;
  • Providing professional development; and;
  • Licensing teachers, administrators, treasurers, superintendents and other education personnel.

    The Ohio Department of Education is governed by the State Board of Education of Ohio. The State Board of Education is comprised of 19 members - 11 elected members and eight members appointed by the governor. The State Board of Education hires the State Superintendent of Public Instruction who leads the Department and is responsible for the day to day administration of the Department. The State Board of Education and the Department oversees the state’s public education system, which includes public school districts, joint vocational school districts, chartered nonpublic and community schools.

    Under the leadership of the State Superintendent of Public Instruction and governed by the State Board of Education, the approximately 650 Department staff, in collaboration with a wide range of organizations, are sharply focused on helping schools and districts continually improve to be the best they can be for each child.
