Approved List for Core Curriculum and Instructional Materials

Under ORC 3313.6028(B), the Department shall establish a list of English language arts core curriculum and instructional materials that are aligned with the science of reading and strategies for effective literacy instruction.

The Department’s list of approved core curriculum and instructional materials is provided below and includes all materials that met the required criteria for prekindergarten and kindergarten-grade 5.

PROCESS TO ESTABLISH THE APPROVED LIST OF HIGH-QUALITY INSTRUCTIONAL MATERIALS IN ENGLISH LANGUAGE ARTS
 

The Department’s process to establish an approved list of high-quality instructional materials in English language arts for core instruction in prekindergarten to grade 5 consists of two components:

  • Identifying materials for immediate inclusion on the approved list (November 2023);
  • Conducting a phased review process for eligible materials that include foundational skills in prekindergarten to grade 5 (November 2023-February 2024).

The Department will utilize the Curriculum Consumer Report (PreK) and EdReports (K-5) reviews as an initial gateway measure for establishing an approved list of high-quality instructional materials in English language arts. Criteria have been identified for determining materials for automatic inclusion on Ohio’s approved list, materials eligible for a limited alignment review and materials eligible for a foundational skills review.

Under ORC 3313.6028(C), beginning no later than the 2024-2025 school year, districts and schools must use core curriculum and instructional materials from the Department’s approved lists in prekindergarten to grade 5.

IMMEDIATE IDENTIFICATION FOR APPROVED LIST (K-5)

Materials that meet the following criteria on EdReports will be automatically included on the Department’s approved list of high-quality instructional materials for core curriculum and instructional materials in English language arts in kindergarten-grade 5:

Materials that meet these criteria will be notified directly. A full list of materials automatically identified for the approved list of high-quality instructional materials for core instruction will be available on the Department’s website in early 2024.

REVIEW PROCESS FOR PREK TO GRADE 5 CORE CURRICULUM AND INSTRUCTIONAL MATERIALS

The Department is conducting a phased review process for eligible vendors with materials that meet identified criteria and include foundational skills instruction in prekindergarten to grade 5.

Information regarding eligibility, application requirements and submission timelines are available in the request for applications.

Key Deadlines

  • Phase 1A: Limited Alignment Review Applications – due Dec. 13, 2023 at 4 p.m.
  • Phase 1B: Intent to Apply for Review – due December 13, 2023 at 4 p.m.
  • Phase 2: Review – Materials due Feb. 16, 2024 at 4 p.m. (Updated 1/19/24)

Approved List for Reading Intervention Programs

 
Under ORC 3313.6028(C), the Department of Education and Workforce shall establish a list of evidence-based reading intervention programs that are aligned with the science of reading and strategies for effective literacy instruction.

The Department’s list of approved reading intervention programs is provided below and includes all materials that met the required criteria for prekindergarten to grade 12.

REQUEST FOR APPLICATIONS REVIEW PROCESS FOR PREK TO GRADE 12 evidence-based reading intervention programs

The Department is conducting an application review process to identify eligible reading intervention programs that support targeted or intensive instruction for students in specific reading skills. Information regarding application requirements and submission requirements are available in the request for applications.

Key Deadlines

  • Intent to Apply – due by Feb. 22, 2024 at 4 p.m.
