Approved List of Core Curriculum and Instructional Materials

Under ORC 3313.6028(B), the Department is responsible for establishing a list of English language arts core curriculum and instructional materials aligned with the science of reading and effective literacy instruction strategies.

The Department’s list of approved core curriculum and instructional materials is provided below and includes all materials that meet the required criteria for prekindergarten and kindergarten-grade 5.

While all vendors on the approved list meet the standards for High Quality Instructional Materials in English Language Arts, districts and schools should carefully review materials to determine which materials best meet the needs of their students and educators.

Per vendor/applicant submitted information, all approved core curriculum and instructional materials for prekindergarten - grade 5 and evidence-based reading intervention programs prekindergarten - grade 12 have self-reported having Professional Development Materials available.

The Core Curriculum Snapshot spreadsheet displays a variety of filters when looking into Department approved core curriculum and instructional materials in English Language Arts. Some of the filters include:

Content Rich: These core curricula embed social studies and science topics for knowledge building and content rich instruction.
 
  • English Learner Supports: The vendors identified in this category self-reported providing English Learner supports within their core curriculum, including features such as connections to primary languages and supports for ELs to understand the content and language expectation(s). 
  • Supports for Students with Disabilities: The vendors identified in this category self-reported providing accessibility, such as universal technology integration, accessible materials, sensory and motor access, and access for students with complex cognitive, communication, motor, and sensory challenges. 
  • Handwriting: The vendors identified in this category self-reported embedded handwriting in their materials, including teacher support materials and scope and sequence for handwriting. 
  • High-Dosage Tutoring: The vendors identified in this category self-reported information on how to embed their core curriculum and instructional materials within high-dosage tutoring. 
  • Reading League Evaluated: These core curricula were reviewed by the Reading League and a Curriculum Navigation Report is available for each. 
  • EdReports Status: These core curricula were identified as all green on EdReports

Prekindergarten

Materials approved in this grade band provide comprehensive language and literacy instruction for prekindergarten.

Kindergarten-Grade 5

Core Comprehensive English Language Arts

Materials approved in this grade band provide comprehensive instruction in K-2 and/or Grades 3-5 English language arts, aligned with standards, grade-level content and strategies for effective literacy instruction. (Note: Approved grades of instructional programming within this grade band are listed for each individual program below.)

Core no Foundational Skills

Materials approved in this grade band provide instruction in K-2 English language arts, except for foundational skills, aligned with standards and strategies for effective literacy instruction. Districts and schools must pair a core no foundational skills program with a foundational skills program in implementation.

Core Foundational Skills

Materials approved in this grade band provide comprehensive foundational skills instruction only, aligned with standards and strategies for effective literacy instruction. Districts and schools must pair a core foundational skills program with a core no foundational skills program or a core comprehensive program in implementation for K-2. (Note: Approved grades of instructional programming within this grade band are listed for each individual program below.)
