Financial Literacy Licensure Validation and Reimbursement

Financial Literacy Licensure Validation and Reimbursement Information

Starting with the 2024-2025 school year, Ohio law requires educators to be properly licensed to teach financial literacy for the half-credit graduation requirement. Educators who are licensed to teach grades 9-12 social studies, mathematics, family and consumer sciences, and business education courses are not required to complete additional training or validation.

The Ohio Department of Education and Workforce established the licensure list for Career-Technical Education based on an educator’s eligibility to teach business or family consumer science courses. The Office of Career Technical Education aligned courses that have a heavy concentration of business or family consumer science standards embedded in the course delivery model, including both standards and course outline and assessment. The list for Career-Technical Education includes all licensure codes that are eligible to teach the aligned courses. For questions about the Career Technical Education list of approved educator licenses, please contact the Office of Career-Technical Education.

Educators licensed to teach grades 9-12 with other teaching fields must complete the requirements to receive the licensure validation in Financial Literacy to teach the required course. The Department has the Teacher Licensure Course Status Search Tool available for school districts to identify credentials required for teaching specific courses like financial literacy. Districts are encouraged to select the most qualified educator for their district to teach Financial Literacy.

Financial Literacy Licensure Validation Process

If an educator needs the license validation to teach financial literacy, educators must complete the steps outlined in Ohio Administrative Code 3301-24-30, which include the following:

Financial Literacy Licensure Validation Reimbursement

Ohio law states that districts may be reimbursed, up to $500 for each educator, for the cost of the educator pursuing the Financial Literacy Licensure Validation.

Once an educator has successfully completed the financial literacy licensure validation process, school districts may begin submitting reimbursement requests. Any direct costs necessary to complete the requirements may be submitted for reimbursement.

Districts will submit reimbursement requests by completing the Financial Literacy Licensure Validation Reimbursement Form. Each form submission can be used to submit for reimbursement for up to nine educators. If a district is seeking reimbursement for more than 9 educators, multiple forms will need to be submitted. Districts are to keep complete documentation of educator training and successful completion of the financial literacy licensure validation exam on file. These records must be made available upon request by the Department.

Districts can complete and submit the Financial Literacy Licensure Validation Reimbursement form anytime throughout the school year. The Department will process reimbursement requests twice a year, in June and December. Funds will be disbursed through the larger foundation payment process directly to districts.
