CPR and AED Requirements for Grades 9-12
Beginning with the 2017-2018 school year, public schools must provide instruction in CPR and the use of an automated external defibrillator (AED) to all students.
Ohio Law states “first aid, including a training program in cardiopulmonary resuscitation, which shall comply with section
3313.6021 of the Revised Code when offered in any of grades nine through twelve, safety, and fire prevention. However, upon written request of the student's parent or guardian, a student shall be excused from taking instruction in cardiopulmonary resuscitation”.
2024 additions to the current law placed under ORC
3313.6021 included the following:
- The training for both CPR and AED must use “psychomotor skills”. (A (2)“Psychomotor skills” means using hands-on practice to support cognitive learning.
- (2) An instructional program that is nationally recognized and based on the most current national, evidence-based emergency cardiovascular care guidelines for cardiopulmonary resuscitation and the use of an automated external defibrillator.
- (C) No student shall receive certification in cardiopulmonary resuscitation and the use of an automated external defibrillator unless the student is trained by an authorized or certified instructor.
- (D) Nothing in this section requires a licensed educator to be certified to provide training in the manner prescribed by this section to facilitate, provide, or oversee instruction in cardiopulmonary resuscitation and the use of an automated external defibrillator that does not result in certification of students.
