Sexually Transmitted Infection Education Audit
Introduction
Ohio Revised Code 3313.6011 requires the Department of Education and Workforce to conduct an annual audit of each city, local, and exempted village school district regarding its compliance with the requirements for Sexually Transmitted Infection Education. District Superintendents or designees are to complete the audit annually between March and June.
Superintendents will find the audit survey in the OH|ID Portal Monitoring application under the new audit name, 2024-2025 Sexually Transmitted Infection Education Audit.

Reporting Requirements
- Provide Sexually Transmitted Infection Education: ORC 3313.60 requires health education to include Sexually Transmitted Infection Education. Sexually Transmitted Infection Education course materials and instruction must include the topics noted in ORC 3313.6011.
- Parental Notification: Notify parents if the school or district chooses to offer instruction in Sexually Transmitted Infection Education or sexual education beyond what is outlined in ORC 3313.6011. The notification must include the name of the instructor and the curriculum being used, and any applicable vendors. Upon request, the district must provide the instructional materials to a parent.
- Parental Permission: Schools and districts are prohibited from providing instruction in Sexually Transmitted Infection Education or sexual education beyond the items outlined in ORC 3313.6011 to a student without written permission from the student's parent or guardian.
- Student Excusal: ORC 3313.60 excuses a student from taking instruction on Sexually Transmitted Infection Education upon written request of the student’s parent or guardian.
- Grades K-6: Annual developmentally appropriate instruction in child sexual abuse prevention, including information on available counseling and resources for children who are sexually abused. ORC 3313.60.
- Grades 7-12: Developmentally appropriate instruction in dating violence prevention education and sexual violence prevention education, which shall include instruction in recognizing dating violence warning signs and characteristics of healthy relationships, except that upon written request of the student's parent or guardian a student shall be excused from taking instruction in sexual violence prevention. ORC 3313.60.
when completing the reporting requirements for the audit:
- Answer all questions (all are required).
- A program or organization name that was used to provide the instructional material is required for question 2.
- Do not use identifying information such as names, phone numbers, or physical addresses for question 3.
- When all questions are answered, update the audit status to “Complete” and click the save button to submit.

Audit Findings
The results of the audit will be posted not later than one hundred twenty (120) days after the start of the school year.

Pursuant to ORC 3301.079 (B) (3) and 3313.60, it is the responsibility of Ohio's local boards of education to vet and approve curriculum and educational materials for use in the public schools within their district. The use of any materials posted or linked to on the Ohio Department of Education and Workforce website, including materials within Ohio’s Learning Standards or Appendices or any state model curricula or other educational resource material, is entirely up to the discretion of each local board of education.
