Challenges
Section Objectives
At the completion of this section, participants will be able to identify the challenges Pickerington Local School District faced when implementing high-quality English language arts instructional materials.
Challenges in Implementation
Like with most new endeavors, Pickerington Local School District’s effort to implement high-quality English language arts instructional materials was not without its challenges. The challenges it faced included staff’s readiness and ability to make changes to their instructional materials, along with learning new practices while continuing to teach students. Therefore, Pickerington knew that having a robust system of support for educators would be crucial to teachers’ ability to effectively implement new instructional materials and pedagogical practices based on the science of reading. Additional challenges included staff buy-in, implementing new instructional materials and practices, and time for professional learning. Pickerington was able to overcome these initial challenges through systematic planning, and the district continues to confront new challenges as they arise.
In the video, Principal Matt Dansby of Tussing Elementary School reflects on challenges faced in implementing high-quality English language arts instructional materials.
Written testimonial
“We had a lot of challenges at the beginning. We didn't really understand why a student was struggling with reading. It was a challenge to move away from [ineffective practices]. So, it was a challenge to get everybody on board to understand why we were moving. We aren’t taking away your professional autonomy; we are trying to align with what the science says. Also, new teachers come every year. How do we get them moving along? It's using teacher-based teams and being intentional with that time that we've been able to overcome [these challenges].”
