The Ohio Department of Education & Workforce is offering professional learning to increase capacity among educational service centers, teachers, districts and school leaders to collaborate in the process of selecting and implementing high-quality instructional materials so that students will acquire the knowledge and skills to be successful through a standards-aligned instructional foundation.  

Statewide Webinars 

Join EdReports and the Department for a series of statewide webinars to learn more about Ohio's initiative for selecting and implementing high-quality instructional materials. Districts and schools are encouraged to attend and utilize the session materials, resources and recordings.   • An overview on why high-quality instructional materials are critical for schools and districts and the implications for students, families and educators. Research shows that high-quality instructional materials can make a difference for students, but the materials used in classrooms are not always aligned to standards.
Sep. 14, 2023 3:30 - 4:30 p.m. Establishing a Process for HQIM Selection
  • This session will explore the components of establishing an effective adoption process including key action steps, sample timelines and resources to map out the process. Participants will explore and reflect on a case study that shows how a real district worked through their process and timeline.​
Oct. 12, 2023 3:30-4:30 p.m. Establishing a Vision for HQIM
  • This session will examine the purpose and components of a compelling vision and the role of the vision in building and maintaining a focused and intentional materials adoption.
Nov. 16, 2023 3:30-4:30 p.m. Developing Your Lens for HQIM
  • This session will showcase best practices for developing a lens for HQIM, including analyzing your current state, examining student data and learning from teachers and other instructional staff on experiences, wants and needs.
Dec. 14, 2023 3:30-4:30 p.m. Best Practices for Instructional Leaders with HQIM Adoption
  • This session will build an understanding of why and how instructional leaders should support teachers throughout the adoption process and examines a case study from Fife Public Schools. Participants will learn how to plan for teacher voice and influence in decision-making and consider strategies for building teacher investment and capacity.
Feb. 15, 2024 3:30-4:30 p.m. Engaging Stakeholders through HQIM
  • This session will examine the importance of stakeholder engagement and building trust through intentional, consistent and transparent two-way communication.
March 7, 2024 3:30-4:30 p.m. Studying and Winnowing Options for HQIM
  • This session will feature a deeper dive into resources for investigating possible material options and winnowing down those options.
April 11, 2024 3:30-4:30 p.m. Supporting Diverse Learners through HQIM
  • This session will provide an overview of how to find supports for diverse learners in HQIM and where to find that information in EdReports. Participants will learn how EdReports defines high-quality student supports and explore reports to see how those supports show up in materials.
May 16, 2024 3:30-4:30 p.m. HQIM and Assessments
  • This session will focus on the importance of curriculum-embedded assessments, what to look for in materials and how to use EdReports review tools to assess for quality assessments in materials.
June 13, 2024 3:30-4:30 p.m. Panel: Best Practices for Preparing for Effective Implementation
  • This session will explore the key steps in building capacity and supporting teachers in effective implementation, including training, coaching and shifts in preparation.

Oct. 13, 2022 3:30 - 4:30 p.m. HQIM Connections to the Ohio Learning Standards
  • This session will focus on the importance of standards alignment when choosing instructional materials. Participants will explore characteristics of standards-aligned instruction and build skills to become critical consumers of instructional materials.
Nov. 10, 2022 3:30 - 4:30 p.m. Supporting Teachers with HQIM
  • This session will showcase best practices and resources that will help build capacity for teachers to use high-quality instructional materials. Participants will explore resources from EdReports and the department that can be used to support the review, selection and implementation of high-quality instructional materials.
Dec. 15, 2022 3:30 - 4:30 p.m. Best Practices for Reviewing, Selecting and Implementing HQIM
  • This session will examine connections between EdReports' adoption processes and Phase 1 of the Ohio Curriculum Support Guide. Participants will be guided through adoption steps and have the opportunity to explore a range of resources that can aid in the process.
Feb. 9, 2023 3:30 - 4:30 p.m. Stakeholder Engagement and HQIM
  • This session will provide an overview of best practices for engaging local stakeholders in the process of selecting materials. Participants will explore case studies and tools that can be used to facilitate an equitable instructional materials adoption process.
March 9, 2023 3:30 - 4:30 p.m. ESC and District HQIM Panel
  • This session will bring together staff from Ohio ESCs and districts who have participated in HQIM-related programming and initiatives during the year. Panelists will share best practices and strategies that have helped them plan and execute successful adoptions. There will also be time for attendees to ask the panelists questions.
April 6, 2023 3:30 - 4:30 p.m. Best Practices for HQIM Implementation
  • This session will explore common pitfalls and challenges districts face when implementing newly selected materials. Participants will review a set of resources that can help educators plan for successful implementations.
May 11, 2023 3:30 - 4:30 p.m. State of the Instructional Materials Market
  • This session will provide an overview of the state of the instructional materials market for math and ELA. Participants will review current research and trends that are impacting how materials are used across the country and what implications that has for Ohio students and educators.
June 15, 2023 3:30 - 4:30 p.m. Promoting HQIM Advocacy
  • This session will provide participants with key strategies to help them advocate for high-quality instructional materials, no matter their role. Participants will hear from local HQIM advocates and build their own toolkit of resources to help build awareness of HQIM-related need for Ohio students and educators.
