Virtual Meetups for Content Area Educators

The Ohio Department of Education is scheduling virtual meetups in collaboration with various professional organizations across the state to support administrators and educators in each content area during the ordered school-building closure. The purpose of the meetups is to support educators and provide a platform to network, share and gain new skills or strategies to help students succeed while learning remotely. This aligns with the vision of Ohio’s Strategic Plan for Education, Each Child, Our Future, which focuses on the whole child by empowering teachers to help students become resilient, lifelong learners who contribute to society. The virtual meetups will help facilitate discussions about equitable learning opportunities and practices for each child while partnering with educators and professional organizations to promote quality schools and student success.

The Department will co-host and publicize the virtual meetups in conjunction with guest presenters sponsored by professional organizations. Sessions will focus on a broad range of topics or strategies depending on the content area.

Mathematics

Building Fact Fluency Through Mathematical Storytelling
When teachers ask students to memorize their facts, they are essentially asking students to memorize over 100 isolated equations. This approach doesn’t allow students to explore the relationships between numbers that are foundational to mathematics. In this session, attendees will explore the important role that context plays in developing fact fluency. By purposefully sequencing a series of tasks and activities through the same context, students can begin to make connections and develop an understanding that is scalable well beyond single digits.
