On August 3-5, 2021, educators connected virtually with the Ohio Department of Education for the Building Bridges to the Future: Instruction Using High-Quality Materials professional learning series. This online event featured sessions across all content areas, with a focus on using high-quality instructional practices and materials, leading to more equitable learning outcomes for all students.

Equity and High-Quality Instructional Materials
Emily Freitag, co-founder and CEO of Instruction Partners, will share the six key takeaways from the Rethinking Intervention series in which she interviewed over 40 renown researchers and practitioners in education. She will share practical lessons learned to achieve more equitable outcomes for students and practical approaches to use high-quality instructional materials to support unfinished learning.

Unraveling the Opportunity Myth
TNTP will share findings from the national report, The Opportunity Myth, which followed nearly 4,000 students to learn more about their experiences. What was found was: Students need access to high-quality materials and instruction that deeply engages them in grade-level content and assignments. As educators decide how to help students “catch-up” after COVID-19 new research confirms the need to focus on “just-in-time” supports to access grade-level content rather than remediation. What commitments can educators make as professionals to unravel the "Opportunity Myth"?

Identify High-Quality Instructional Materials with EdReports and the RemotEDx Rubric
Teachers and administrators know how important high-quality instructional materials are for student learning, but access to the best materials remains an issue for many educators. Time is of the essence, and too often, the criteria for high-quality instructional materials is unclear. To build capacity in Ohio schools to find and use quality materials, INFOhio has partnered with EdReports to provide a free class on how to use their reviews of instructional materials available for districts. In addition, INFOhio synthesized criteria from various sources for high-quality instructional materials in the development of the RemotEDx Rubric, creating a tool that can be used not only for Open Educational Resources, but also when considering supplemental materials. Learn more about INFOhio's platform, available through the RemotEDx Exchange, to provide EdReports content for Ohio educators. Districts looking for how to find and evaluate instructional materials will benefit from this session.
Eye of Integration: Interdisciplinary Explanation and Exploration
Join content area consultants from the Ohio Department of Education as they share the development of a multi-disciplinary, integrated unit, featuring one of Ohio’s treasures. Consultants will discuss the creative design process and the benefits of integrated units in the elementary classroom. Participants will have the opportunity to provide insight on implementation strategies. Interested participants will also have the opportunity to pilot this unit in their classroom.

Equity Through Rigorous Texts for All Students
Join Ohio Literacy Leads, Carolyn Turner and Michelle Elia as they build a rationale for using complex texts for all students. Exposure to complex texts allows learners to acquire the vocabulary and content necessary to read texts in English Language Arts and across content areas and disciplines. Participants in this session will engage in simulations, conversations, and connections to classroom applications using complex texts with all students across all disciplines.

Using Performance Level Descriptors to Plan and Deliver K-2 Mathematics Instruction
Educators will learn how to use the K-2 Performance Level Descriptors published by the Council of Chief State School Officers to set learning goals for students.
