Exiting Student Collection

Data Collection on Post-High School Outcomes

Ohio’s education system is dedicated to preparing students for future success. To better understand what students go on to do after high school, the Ohio Department of Education is developing a new exiting student follow-up data collection to meet requirements in federal and state law.

As you may have seen from the recent release, Ohio School Report Cards are publishing additional data on a variety of report-only measures, which will include the post-high school paths of graduates and non-graduates from districts and schools across Ohio beginning with the 2022-2023 report cards. The data will include enrollment in two- and four-year postsecondary education institutions, participation in registered apprenticeships, military enlistment, and employment information. Eventually, the report card will contain information on post-graduate “gainful employment.”

Historically, districts and schools have reported follow-up information on exiting career-technical education students and students with disabilities to the Department. The new data collection will build one seamless approach for reporting the post-high school outcomes for all students and will replace the current independent collections for these groups, including the Ohio Longitudinal Transition Study survey (Individuals with Disabilities Education Act: Section 1416 (a) (3)) and Career-Technical Education Workforce Development Follow-up (Federal Perkins: Section 113 (b) (A) (ii)).

Additional information on the reporting requirements, including data collection surveys and supports from the Department can be found on this page. Training has been provided for EMIS coordinators. The initial collection window begins Nov. 9, 2022, and closes Jan. 6, 2023. Data from this initial collection will be used for the federal reporting requirements in Perkins V for career-technical students. The final collection window begins Feb. 9, 2023, and closes Aug. 4, 2023.  Data from this final collection period will be used for the Ohio School Report Cards published in the fall of 2023 and for the special education profiles.

In addition to the data you collect, the Department will work to provide information on your exiting students from external resources such as the National Student Clearinghouse. We will share this data as it becomes available.

Thank you for your dedication to Ohio’s students!

As the Department continues to build these processes to better understand what students go on to do after high school, it is recommended that all districts continue to plan and refine the ways they will stay in communication with students once they have exited. This process should be a joint effort across the district leadership team. Here are a few ideas to help you get started.
