Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps (JROTC)

Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps (JROTC) is a leadership development program based in the values and practices of the four branches of the United States military. The program combines classroom experiences with service to students' schools and communities. Available in high schools and postsecondary institutions throughout the state, JROTC programs teach students the values of leadership, teamwork and self-discipline.

The mission of the JROTC program nationally is "to motivate young people to be better citizens." In addition to professional and personal development, participation in a JROTC program can support students' pathway to graduation. Students can earn the Military Enlistment Seal by participating in JROTC programs. The Military Enlistment Seal can be used toward demonstrating readiness for graduation.

Skills taught in JROTC programs are valuable for all students, not just those interested in joining the military in the future. For students who are interested in careers in the military, it provides relevant experience that can better prepare them for and connect them to their future goals.

The National Defense Act of 1916 established organized JROTC programs at public and private educational institutions. In 1964, Congress expanded the program to all military services. JROTC instructors in Ohio need to apply for the temporary military science teaching license.
