Related Services

Related services are essential supports that help students with disabilities thrive in their educational journey. These developmental, corrective, and supportive services ensure that students can fully benefit from special education. Related service professionals, also referred to as Specialized Instructional Support Personnel (SISP), such as speech-language pathologists, school psychologists, educational audiologists, school nurses, occupational and physical therapists, and school social workers, are highly skilled professionals dedicated to enhancing student success.

In Ohio, the role of related services professionals is fundamental to creating an effective and inclusive educational environment. Their expertise supports students, families, and school staff, ensuring every child has the tools they need to succeed. As part of the Individualized Education Program (IEP) team, they review evaluations to identify necessary services and integrate them into the student’s IEP. These services may include setting specific IEP goals, providing accommodations or services to support school personnel.

By working closely with both special and general education, related services professionals address students' physical, behavioral, communication, and social-emotional needs, allowing them to achieve their IEP goals and succeed in the general curriculum. They also collaborate with the entire school community—parents, teachers, administrators, health care providers and beyond—to prepare students for further education, employment, and independent living.

Together, related services professionals are vital to ensuring that Ohio’s educational system is inclusive, effective, and committed to every student’s success.

Regional Speech-language Pathology and School Psychology Consultants

The Office for Exceptional Children (OEC) is thrilled to introduce a dynamic team of six regional Speech-Language Pathologist Consultants (SLPCs) and six School Psychologist Consultants (SPCs).

Working closely with OEC, the SLPCs and SPCs  will provide targeted support to districts in need of additional resources. In areas with existing lead therapists, psychologists, or coordinators, they will partner to enhance professional development and foster success. From improving special education evaluations and identification processes to addressing significant disproportionality, these consultants are here to make a real difference. They will also offer valuable insights on managing caseloads, ensuring compliance, and empowering special education teams to boost efficiency, retention, and overall success.
