Supports for Students in Foster Care

Children living in foster care face many educational barriers, including high mobility, increased incidences of trauma, and mental, behavioral and physical health conditions. The following resources can assist schools and districts in providing services that increase educational success for students living in foster care:   

• Engaging and Supporting Students in Foster Care details ways to provide stabilizing supports for students in foster care while encouraging them to take an active role in decision making.  

• Transportation Supports details transportation supports and considerations for students in foster care.    

• Recruiting Special Populations into Career Technical Education provides support for educators to support increased enrollment in career technical education for students in special populations, including students in foster care. 

• Supports for Students in Foster Care Progressing Towards Self-Sufficiency provides resources to help a student in foster care plan for next steps and connect to resources for continuing education, housing, and employment.
