Ohio PBIS Resources for Educators and School Personnel

Educators and School Personnel are the key to successful implementation of Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) within the school and classroom.  Educators want to teach in order to improve children’s lives academically and socially. Many teachers find they are losing valuable teaching time due to classroom disruptions. When instructional time is lost, it negatively impacts morale and decreases students’ opportunities for success.

Many educators are finding that the most effective way to address disruptive behavior is to address issues before they happen.  Many educators have found that the solution is a proactive, consistent approach to school-wide discipline provided by the Ohio PBIS model. Using the PBIS framework, schools have seen reductions in disciplinary actions and increases in academic achievement.  When PBIS is implemented, educators have more time to teach and students have more time to learn.

Public schools in Ohio are now required to adopted policies and procedures regarding PBIS. If you have questions about your school’s PBIS policy, please contact your administrator(s).

Ohio Department of Education State Support Teams (SSTs) have Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports consultant(s) who are available to contact for getting started, classroom resources, training, technical assistance, and information on conferences and networking opportunities. Administrators seeking additional information in this regard are referred to the materials in the reference material section (left navigation menu).

School administrators establishing a PBIS framework in their schools are encouraged to review the Ohio PBIS Recognition Awards System rubric. You may wish to align your efforts to the proposed Ohio Recognition Awards System in order to prepare your school for eventual recognition in this system.

Additionally, Ohio school administrators will note that the current Ohio Principal Evaluation System (OPES) specifically identifies PBIS practices as representative of “Accomplished” level practices. Element 3.1 (Principals establish and maintain a safe school environment) specifies the following:

“Principal promotes and implements a school-wide system for behavioral support and intervention.”
