PBIS for Educators
Ohio PBIS Resources for Educators and School Personnel
Educators and school personnel are key to successful implementation of Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) within the school and classroom. The PBIS framework supports staff working with students to establish clear expectations, provide regular acknowledgement for the things students do well, and give instructional consequences more often than exclusionary ones.
PBIS is a proactive way to address disruptive behaviors through consistent school-wide expectations and reinforcement. Using the PBIS framework, schools have seen reductions in disciplinary actions and increases in academic achievement. As a result, educators have more time to teach, and students have more time to learn.
Ohio law requires that schools and districts adopt policies and procedures regarding PBIS. If you have questions about your school’s PBIS policy, please contact your local school administrator.
Administrators
School administrators have an essential role within the PBIS framework. Building leaders can assess what is already in place within their school and use the PBIS framework to integrate additional initiatives and priorities. Administrators build the team responsible for leading PBIS implementation and provide ongoing support and guidance.
Additionally, the current Ohio Principal Evaluation System (OPES) specifically identifies PBIS practices as representative of “Accomplished” level practices for principals. Element 3.1 (Principals establish and maintain a safe school environment) specifies the following:
“Principal promotes and implements a school-wide system for behavioral support and intervention.”
