Ohio English Language Proficiency Screener (OELPS)

Test Window: The OELPS test window opens on Aug. 3 for the 2022-2023 school year.  Please refer to the OELPS/OELPA portal for information and materials for the 2022/2023 administration.

English Learners who Transfer to an Ohio Public School from Out-of-State

Students identified as English learners who transfer to an Ohio public school from a state that does not use the ELPA21 program are subject to Ohio's standardized English learner identification. Please review the updated OELPS Frequently Asked Question about English learners who transfer from another state for more detailed information.

Secure Browsers for 2022-2023

Secure Browser version 15 for desktop and laptop devices running a supported version of Windows, Linux or macOS 11 and 12 will be available to download from the Secure Browsers page of the OELPS/OELPA test portal beginning on Friday, July 8. For these operating systems, version 15 of the secure browser is the only version that can be used beginning Aug. 3. Older versions of the secure browser installed on desktop and laptop devices cannot be used for secure student testing after July 8. Version 12.5 of the secure browser will continue to be available only for desktops and laptops running macOS 10.15.

Supported versions of Chromebooks and iPads will use Secure Test Browser 8 for the 2022-2023 school year. Beginning Aug. 3 earlier versions of the Chrome OS and iPad Secure Test Browser cannot be used for secure student testing.

Technical Documentation

For 2022-2023, the Technology Coordinator page hosts all technical documentation directly within the site. This makes the documentation easy to navigate, more accessible, fully searchable, require no downloading and allows for easy updating throughout the school year when necessary. The information can also easily be printed. The documentation includes updates to minimum supported versions for all operating systems, supported browsers and new URLs added to the network configuration allow list.

The Office of Assessment and Cambium Assessment, Inc. (CAI) are pleased to announce that we have worked with Google to improve and simplify the management of Chrome OS devices and to provide a more stable testing platform for educational institutions. For 2022-2023, Chrome OS devices will be supported by the new Long-term Support Candidate (LTC) and Long-term Support (LTS) channels offered by Google. Unlike the Beta and Stable channels’ six-week release cadence, these new channels only update twice per year. Beginning with the launch of CAI assessment system in August, all Chrome OS devices used for secure student testing must be on the LTC or LTS channel to take advantage of these benefits. Please see this Google article for more information about the benefits and how to switch devices to these channels.

Lastly, CAI is transitioning to a support model where for supported major versions, all minor versions released beyond the minimum set in the documentation will be assumed supported. For example, if macOS 12.4 is supported and Apple were to release 12.5, it would automatically be considered supported.
