Alternate Ohio English Language Proficiency Assessment (Alt-OELPA)
New! Department Releases Ohio Learning Standards for English Language Proficiency-Extended
The Department has implemented a new set of learning standards: the Ohio Learning Standards-Extended for English Language Proficiency-Extended. The extended standards for English language proficiency complement and correspond to the existing Ohio English Language Proficiency Standards. Together, the general and extended English language proficiency standards describe expectations for the effective instruction of students who are English learners, including those with the most significant cognitive disabilities. On June 29, 2021, Superintendent Paolo DeMaria announced the Ohio Learning Standards-Extended for English Language Proficiency in a memo to all Ohio educational agencies serving students who are English learners. Please contact the Office for Whole Child Supports at (614)-466-2945 or email firstname.lastname@example.org for more information about teaching with Ohio’s standards for English language proficiency.
To comply with federal statute, the Department is developing a new assessment, the Alternate Ohio English Language Proficiency Assessment (Alt-OELPA) for English learners with the most significant cognitive disabilities. The new English Language Proficiency Standards-Extended are the basis for the Alt-OELPA. An operational field test is scheduled for school year 2022-2023. The Alt-OELPA is planned to be fully operational in the 2023-2024 school year. Please contact the Office of Assessment at (614) 466-1317 or email@example.com for additional information about Ohio’s English language proficiency assessments.
