New! Ohio English Language Proficiency Screener (OELPS) Test Window Opening Delayed
The 2021-2022 Ohio English Language Proficiency Screener (OELPS) testing window will open later than originally expected. The OELPS was scheduled to open Aug. 5. However, the Ohio Department of Administrative Services continues working to complete Ohio’s competitive selection process for an assessment vendor. The Ohio Department of Education will announce the new testing window start date as soon as possible on the 2021-2022 Testing Dates webpage. Please direct questions to firstname.lastname@example.org.
New! OELPS and English Learner Identification
Last school year, the U.S. Department of Education allowed States to adjust their standardized English learner identification procedures in response to the COVID-19 national emergency. For the 2021-2022 school year, however, because it is anticipated that schools will be open for in-person learning, schools would follow the pre-pandemic English learner identification procedures rather than a presumptive identification process. As a reminder, districts must administer the OELPS in person (no remote administration).
New! Ohio English Language Proficiency Screener for the Beginning of Kindergarten (OELPS-BK)
In response to stakeholder feedback, the Department will implement a new proficiency threshold for kindergarteners taking the OELPS in the beginning of the kindergarten year. Beginning in school year 2021, 2022, students taking the Kindergarten OELPS before Dec. 31 of each school year will be proficient (not an English learner) if they earn scores of 3 or higher in all nonexempt domains of the screener. Students taking the kindergarten OELPS after Dec. 31 of each school year will be proficient if they earn scores of 4 or higher in all nonexempt domains of the screener.
