National Assessment of Educational Progress in Ohio

The National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP), often referred to as The Nation’s Report Card, is the only nationally representative and continuous assessment of what America's students know and are able to do in various subject areas. As a congressionally mandated project of the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES) within the U.S. Department of Education, NAEP provides a comprehensive measure of students' learning at critical junctures in their school experiences. NAEP plays an integral role in evaluating the conditions and progress of the nation's and individual state's education of students at grades four, eight, and twelve. The reading and mathematics assessments for grades four and eight are administered in all states on a regular two-year cycle.

Ohio Policy Regarding NAEP Participation

The No Child Left Behind and Every Student Succeeds Acts mandated that all states and districts receiving Title I funding must participate in the biennial NAEP assessments in reading and mathematics in grades 4 and 8, effective with the 2003 NAEP assessment.

NAEP 2024-2025 Assessments

Long Term Trend

NAEP Long-Term Trend has been administered since 1970 and assesses students ages 9, 13, and 17 in mathematics and reading. In 2025, a sample of Ohio's 9 and 13-year-old students participated, and the National results will be available in June 10, 2026.

Field Test

NCES also administered the NAEP 2025 Field Test to assess students at grades 4, 8, and 12 in mathematics and reading. The field test is part of a transition to administering NAEP using school computers and Internet, which will allow students to have a more authentic assessment experience by using a device with which they are familiar. Results from the field test will not be released but will inform future NAEP assessments.
