Recently, many school districts have contacted the Ohio Department of Education asking if they will experience financial consequences for students who do not participate in Ohio’s New State Tests.
A school district may need to delay school or cancel a day or several days of school during its scheduled testing window, due to weather or other unexpected circumstances. This guidance addresses the extension of a district’s testing window only under these circumstances. A district cannot use a testing window extension for a school delay or closure that occurred before testing started.
Ohio includes all students, including those with disabilities, in state tests, and their results are included in state accountability. All children matter, and Ohio has a responsibility to make sure that all children learn and grow in our classrooms.
Many districts are receiving communication from families refusing their children’s participation in state tests this spring. The department encourages schools to talk with families about their concerns regarding testing.
