Ohio Improvement Process

Ohio Improvement Process (OIP) as an Organizational Strategy

The Ohio Improvement Process (OIP) is a recommended framework used by district, building and teacher leaders as they plan for local continuous improvement across grade levels and subject areas to impact student achievement. The Department supports the implementation of this framework using a regional infrastructure for school improvement. The process facilitates communication and decision-making between and across levels of the system (district, central office, school, grade levels, content areas, classrooms).

Leadership teams (classroom, school and district) use this framework to engage in problem solving as they take actions to remove barriers and implement solutions. Leadership teams at each level of the system support implementation of the continuous improvement work.

The Ohio Improvement Process is an organizational strategy that supports the implementation of each step of the Ohio Improvement Process. Those steps include:

  • Supporting Implementation: Team structures and processes that support the implementation of each step in the Ohio Improvement Process
  1. Identify critical needs by collecting and analyzing student data to pinpoint the root cause for areas of concern.
  2. Research and select evidence-based strategies to address the root cause.
  3. Plan for implementation by developing SMART goals and action steps to implement solutions
  4. Implement and monitor the action steps and the impact on student outcomes.
  5. Examine, reflect and adjust action steps based upon the effect on student outcomes.

OIP and ED STEPS

Ohio's Education Department's System of Tiered E-Plans and Supports (ED STEPS) aligns with Ohio's continuous improvement process and meets federal requirements. ED STEPS allows district and building teams to electronically assess needs, develop improvement plans and apply for funding, ED STEPS also allows schools to document goals, strategies, and action steps as well as monitor the effectiveness of their plans in one location.
