Ohio’s Comprehensive School Safety Framework

8/17/2023

As the school year begins it is a great time for school staff to consider the systems and supports in place for a safe school environment. Reviewing systems and policies at the beginning of the school year helps to establish clear systems for a safe school environment. A safe school addresses the emotional and physical safety of students and staff by using a comprehensive approach that engages school staff, students, families and the community. Ohio’s Comprehensive School Safety Framework is a guide to support local implementation of school safety and includes:

  • Evidenced-based best practices to assist schools in developing a comprehensive approach that engages school staff, students and families;
  • Important role assignments for key personnel in developing a comprehensive school safety approach including principals, counselors, school security and law enforcement; and
  • A list of the short-term, intermediate and long-term results that the framework will deliver to more holistically support every child across Ohio.
Review Ohio’s Comprehensive School Safety Framework for more detail. Send questions to Jill Jackson.

For additional school safety support, consider attending the U.S. Secret Service National Threat Assessment Center’s (NTAC) free virtual event highlighting key findings and implications from decades of research on school violence. The virtual event will take place Aug. 24 from noon to 3 p.m. via Microsoft Teams. Prior registration is required; register at: www.secretservice.gov/SCHOOL2023.
