Ohio’s English Language Proficiency Assessments

Alt-OELPA Administration and Student Eligibility
The Alt-OELPA administration opens Jan. 29, and will close March 22, 2024. The Alt-OELPA is designed for English learners with the most significant cognitive disabilities, who are unable to participate in the Ohio English Language Proficiency Assessment (
OELPA) even with accommodations. Most English learners with disabilities will participate in the general OELPA rather than the Alt-OELPA. The
Alt-OELPA Participation Guidelines assist Individualized Education Program (IEP) teams in determining a student’s eligibility for the Alt-OELPA. When IEP teams have determined student eligibility for the Alt-OELPA, the IEP must list the Alt-OELPA and any accommodations and domain exemptions in Section 12 of the IEP. The student’s record in
TIDE must also have the IEP and Alt-OELPA fields marked yes. For assistance updating student records in TIDE, refer to the
TIDE User Guide or contact the Ohio Help Desk at 1-877-231-7809 or
OHHelpDesk@cambiumassessment.com.
Save the Date for the Alt-OELPA Webinar
The Ohio Department of Education and Workforce’s Office of Assessment invites you to the
Alternate Ohio English Language Proficiency Assessment Webinar on Wednesday, Dec. 13, 10:00 a.m.–12:00 p.m. This webinar is primarily for school and district staff who will administer the Alt-OELPA. The webinar will provide a brief overview of the Alt-OELPA, statewide results from the 2023 administration, and updates for the Spring 2024 administration, including student eligibility considerations, test administration procedures, and domain exemptions.
Registration information is posted in the
Announcements section of the test portal. All are welcome to attend, so please share this information with your colleagues, especially those who will administer the Alt-OELPA this school year.
Spring 2023 Alt-OELPA Results
The Spring 2023 Alt-OELPA results are available in the
Centralized Reporting System (CRS). The Alt-OELPA student results files created in the CRS are generated using the default CRS layout and not the Ohio custom layout. When exporting a student results file, there is an output selection for “Data File for Each Test” or “Single Combined Data File.” When the Single Combined Data File output is selected, subscores (domain scores) are not available. For domain scores (listening, reading, speaking, and writing), the
Data File for Each Test option should be selected in CRS. Contact the Ohio Help Desk with any questions at 1-877-231-7809 or
ohhelpdesk@cambiumassessment.com.
OELPA Spring Administration
The Spring OELPA administration opens Jan. 29, and will close March 22, 2024. Districts and schools that placed an on-time order for OELPA paper tests will receive their materials Jan. 16, 2024.
