Charter Schools Program grant application now available

The Department posted the federal Charter Schools Program Request for Application on April 20 on the Charter Schools Program webpage. The grants are for Fiscal Year 2018. After reviewing the application process, interested, eligible community schools must submit an intent to apply by May 1, 2017. The Department will accept applications in its Comprehensive Continuous Improvement Plan system from May 18-June 15.

Video educates students and families about consequences of bomb threats

Spring is when students start to think about the end of the school year and a time when schools see increases in bomb threats. Previous incidents tell us that threats most often come from students. Fortunately, educators can take steps now to prevent future bomb warnings. Prevention begins by educating students and families about the serious consequences for making threats, including felony charges and imprisonment.

New award for schools committed to military families

On April 25, Superintendent Paolo DeMaria will announce the Purple Star Award for military-friendly schools. There are 34,000 children in Ohio with parents in the military. As students, they can face unique challenges, such as frequent moves and deployment of a parent. In the summer and fall of 2016, stakeholders came together to talk about ways schools could better serve these students. This award is a direct result of these conversations.

New federal regulations address ‘disproportionate discipline’ for students in special education

As districts prepare their final student EMIS data, it is important to confirm the accuracy of student discipline data. New IDEA regulations clarify the categories of discipline events for which states must share and analyze data. Findings of significant disproportionality in any of these areas may trigger assistance, a required redirection of federal special education funds and a review of policies, practices and procedures.
