Commodity Food Program is reorganized

The Office for Child Nutrition is currently reviewing and reorganizing its Commodity Foods Program. Schools participating in the National School Lunch Program and/or the Summer Food Service Program receive donated foods from the United States Department of Agriculture. Beginning Jan. 1, 2015, all schools must order commodities directly through the Ohio Department of Education for school year 2015-2016.

$10 Million Available Through Ohio’s New School Mentorship Program; Register for webcast on Dec. 10

Community Connectors provides $10 million in 3-to-1 matching grants that will help give more Ohio students access to role models who can help motivate and inspire them, as well as help them develop skills that lead to success in school and the workplace. For details on applying for a grant, join the Ohio Department of Education and other state and local community leaders in a webcast on Wednesday, Dec. 10, at 3 p.m. Please register here. There will be recording of the webcast posted this week as soon as it is available.

Ohio receives waiver to eliminate double testing in elementary and middle schools

The U.S. Department of Education has approved the Ohio Department of Education’s request for a waiver from “double testing” students below ninth grade who are taking high school-level courses for credits. The waiver, which only applies to the 2014-2015 school year, requires these students in elementary and middle school to test above their grade levels – in the high school-level courses they took for credit – and prohibits them from taking the assessments for the courses at their current grade levels. These students must take the performance-based assessments and the end-of-year exams that match the high school-level courses.
