Guidance document available on status of USDA food orders for NSLP

Deputy administrator of the Supplemental Nutrition and Safety Program Diane Kriviski has issued information and guidance on the current status of USDA foods orders for the National School Lunch Program. The memorandum discusses issues in fulfilling orders for a variety of protein products for school year 2014-2015.

FedEx donates Boeing aircraft to Beavercreek City Schools for STEM classroom

A retired Boeing 727-200F aircraft operated by FedEx Express will complete one more flight Thursday, Nov. 20, when it lands at Dayton International Airport. The aircraft will then be renovated into a Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) classroom for Beavercreek City School District. The aircraft will help Dayton and surrounding area students succeed in school, mobilize future talent and cultivate a workforce that is prepared to meet the technical and transportation career challenges of the future.

INFOhio Announces Storia: Ohio's 4th Grade eBook Collection

Ohio’s fourth-grade teachers have free access to a special collection of 160 eBooks through Scholastic’s Storia as part of an INFOhio pilot program for the remainder of the 2014-2015 school year. The 160 titles were specially chosen to support Ohio’s fourth-grade standards in English, math, social studies and science.

Grant opportunity to implement advanced career-tech programs in 2015-2016

Grants are available for high schools and career-tech centers in Ohio to implement Advanced Career Pathways in 2015-2016. Schools are eligible for $6,500 for the professional development required to teach advanced career courses and another $10,000 to support a portion of the cost for equipment, supplies and consumables.

Community school students can participate in extracurricular activities

Students enrolled in Ohio community schools now have the opportunity to participate in extracurricular activities in their districts of residence. State law, passed in July 2014, requires district superintendents to offer community school students “the opportunity to participate in that extracurricular activity at the district school to which the student otherwise would be assigned during that school year.” In the past, home education students have had this right. Now community school students have the same opportunity.

Voluntary School Environmental Health Guidelines available for review and comment

The Ohio Department of Health’s School Environmental Health program, along with a group of advisors from the educational and public health communities developed voluntary guidelines for school environmental health. The draft voluntary guidelines are now posted on the website.
