From the Superintendent

Recently, I became a grandfather for the first time. I’m excited to think about spending time with my granddaughter in the next few years, sharing knowledge that I hope will launch her toward a happy, productive life. But, I also know that soon she’ll be spending most of her time with individuals who will have greater influence on her than I do—her teachers.

Monday, May 4, is School Bus Driver Appreciation Day in Ohio

Studies show school buses are the safest mode of transportation for getting children back and forth to school. Approximately 15,000 school bus drivers transport more than 1.2 million students over 170 million miles of Ohio roads each year. Ohio’s school bus drivers receive special training in safety, security and medical procedures and undergo regular driving-record checks.

New opportunity available for Value-Added leaders and teachers

Applications are now available for Ohio’s Principal, and Teacher, Value-Added Leaders. The Ohio Department of Education, with support from Battelle for Kids, is announcing the selection, development and credentialing of a regionally selected group of school leaders for understanding and using Value-Added measures. Principals, assistant principals – as well as teachers – who have experience using this data to inform school improvement efforts are encouraged to apply for these leadership opportunities to improve data literacy among Ohio’s school leaders.

Register now for Ohio ASCD summer conference, June 9-10

The Ohio Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development will host its summer conference, Inclusive Best Practices: UDL and Success for All Learners, in Columbus. The conference keynote will be delivered by John McCarthy on Myth-Busting Differentiated Instruction: Making the Invisible Visible. Breakout sessions will include OTES and Differentiation, the Ohio Dyslexia Pilot Project, Building a Culture of Differentiation, UDL Best Practices and more. An optional second day will provide credentialing for Level 1 training on Formative Instructional Practices.

New CDC tool kit on managing food allergies in schools available

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is offering a new tool kit, Managing Food Allergies in Schools. Food allergies affect approximately 4-6 percent of children in the United States. Helping school staff to be prepared to prevent and manage a child’s severe allergic reaction can create a healthy environment where all school children can reach their full potential.
