Information about state budget bill changes to teacher evaluation system posted

The 2016-2017 state budget bill includes language affecting several aspects of the Ohio Teacher Evaluation System. First, the legislation extends “safe harbor” provisions — meaning that districts will not use value-added ratings from state tests as part of educator evaluations or when making decisions regarding dismissal, retention, tenure or compensation — unless they establish a memorandum of understanding to do so.

Principal’s Toolkit available to help communicate about the 2015-2016 school year

The toolkit contains newsletter features and other resources principals can use to inform parents about topics of keen interest, such as school safety, connecting school and careers, diploma requirements and new state tests.

Kindergarten Readiness Assessment (KRA) Update 2015-2016 School Year

The Kindergarten Readiness Assessment provides important information to teachers and parents about what supports a child may need during the first year of school. Last school year was the first administration of this assessment. Ohio teachers gave feedback and recommendations for improvements in 2015-2016 school year. The department listened and has reduced the number of items on the assessment by 21 percent in 2015-2016 school year. For an update on the KRA for this year, click here.

Third Grade Reading update

The Ohio Achievement Assessments (OAA) will no longer be administered. Ohio’s state test in grade 3 English language arts replaces the third grade reading OAA and will meet the requirements of the Third Grade Reading Guarantee. Additional information regarding cut scores will be forthcoming.

Submitting resolution to not offer career tech in grades 7-8 available Sept. 1

State law requires school districts to provide career-technical education programs in grades 7-12. If a local board of education elects not to provide career-technical education programs in grades 7 and 8, it must adopt a resolution that specifies this decision and submit it to the Ohio Department of Education by Sept. 30 of that school year.

2015 supplemental funding expenditures for career-tech programs now due in September

Due to data issues, the department did not distribute Career Technical Education Supplemental Funding guidance letters (formerly known as CTAE Weighted Funds Certification Letter) until the end of Fiscal Year 2015. Therefore, school districts and joint vocational school districts have until the beginning of September 2015 to finalize their FY15 Career Technical Education Supplemental Funding expenditures.
