State Board of Education awards High Performing Schools

The State Board of Education recently recognized one Ohio school district and four schools with the All A Award. To qualify, the awardees earned straight A’s on their 2016-2017 Ohio School Report Cards. In addition, the State Board bestowed its Momentum Award on 64 districts and 214 schools for exceeding expectations in student growth for the year.

Community Connectors information sessions scheduled for December

The Community Connectors grant program creates local partnerships to provide volunteer mentoring to students across Ohio. Through these alliances, Ohio’s students have gained access to role models who can motivate and inspire them and help them develop skills that lead to success in school and the workplace. The application period for the next round of Community Connectors grants will open in February 2018. The state will award $8 million in 3:1 matching grants.

Coming: Quality Model for STEM and STEAM Schools

In early December, the Ohio Department of Education’s Office of Innovation will release a Quality Model for STEM and STEAM Schools. This document will provide clarity about high-quality STEM and STEAM school practices and include examples. Schools seeking STEM or STEAM designation or those interested in innovative instructional approaches should consult this document. The Quality Model will be available here.

Students saving $144 million on college costs with College Credit Plus program

More than 68,000 Ohio high school students took college classes during the 2016-2017 academic year, earning college credit while meeting their high school graduation requirements. Collectively, their families saved more than $144 million in higher education costs.

Severe weather poster contest open to students in grades 1-6

The Ohio Committee for Severe Weather Awareness is sponsoring a poster contest for students in grades 1-6. Entries should demonstrate the actions students can take before, during and after severe weather events to protect themselves and others.
