From the Interim Superintendent

I’m always saddened by the knowledge that nearly one million Ohioans lack high school diplomas. As a former teacher, building principal and district superintendent, I feel that even one student missing the chance to earn a diploma is unacceptable. Over the years, I’ve wondered what more we could do to ensure that all students graduate from high school, as well as what we could do to offer a second chance to those who have already dropped out.

Medical waiver requests due online May 27

Although all students are expected to participate in state tests, there may be a rare circumstance in which a student cannot take one or more assessments during the entire testing window, including makeup dates, because of a medical emergency. In such cases, a district must complete and submit an application for a medical emergency waiver. Superintendents, superintendent designees, principals, test coordinators and Education Management Information System (EMIS) coordinators now may submit 2016 applications through a new online system.

School counselor evaluation framework approved; local policies due Sept. 30

The State Board of Education has approved a standards-based state framework for the evaluation of school counselors, as required by state law. By Sept. 30, 2016, each school district board of education must adopt a school counselor evaluation policy that conforms with this framework and Ohio Revised Code. Beginning next school year, each school counselor will participate in an evaluation conducted according to state law and the evaluation framework (which aligns with the Ohio Standards for School Counselors), as well as the local district policy.

Registration now open for May career-technical education workshops

The Ohio College Tech Prep Regional Centers are hosting regional workshops on the career-technical education program process. Leah Amstutz, from the Ohio Department of Education, will present the workshop for administrators of career-technical planning districts and associate schools with career-technical education programs.

Standards review advisory committees hold first meeting to review comments

Representatives from 18 statewide educational organizations serving on advisory committees held their first meeting April 14 concerning the review of Ohio’s Learning Standards in English language arts and mathematics. During this initial session, committee members learned about the results of the standards revision survey conducted Feb. 23 through April 5.
