From the Superintendent

Yesterday, I emailed a letter about a new Ohio initiative to strengthen school safety plans and keep our students safer. Almost all of Ohio’s 4,000 schools have submitted a school safety plan as required by state law, and I appreciate the time you have spent on those plans. But a recent review showed that many could be strengthened to help schools save more lives in the event of an emergency. That’s why I’m asking for your help.

My earlier letter asked you to fill out an assessment tool with important questions about your school safety plan. Because this law was put into place five years ago, educators holding these certificates need to update the background checks when they expire this year, if they have not already done so. Educators may view the dates of their previous background checks through the Educator Profile on the department’s website at education.ohio.gov.

Your district needs to identify the test coordinator, a summer contact to receive the test kits between July 21 and Aug. 8, and the total number of Kindergarten teachers for the 2014-2015 school year, including intervention specialists who serve Kindergarten students.

Updated nutrition standards for foods and beverages sold during the school day

In June 2013, the U.S. Department of Agriculture released the Interim Final Rule “Smart Snacks in Schools.” The rule is intended to bring a nationwide focus to the types of foods and beverages that may be sold throughout the school campus during the defined “regular school day.” Ohio law defines food and beverage standards for the regular school day in public and nonpublic chartered schools in Ohio regardless of National School Lunch Program participation.
