September is National Preparedness Month

8/22/2022

Emergency managers, teachers and others who work with children understand that children and youth can be vulnerable during disasters. It is important to ensure their safety and to include their needs in planning, response and recovery efforts.

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s Ready.gov webpage features preparedness, planning, response and recovery resources to help emergency managers and practitioners integrate the needs of children and youth into their disaster planning efforts. Ready.gov also offers classroom-ready resources that are appropriate for students from pre-kindergarten to high school. Embedded with real-world connections, these multidisciplinary lessons teach what to do before, during and after an emergency while fostering critical 21st-century skills such as problem solving, teamwork, creativity, leadership and communication.
