Department of Defense Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Program

The Department of Defense (DoD) Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Program (DoD Fresh) permits the School Food Authority (SFA) personnel to utilize planned assistance level (PAL) from the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Foods Program to obtain fresh fruit and vegetables through the Department of Defense. The DoD Fresh is open to any SFA participating in the National School Lunch Program and served lunches in the previous school year thereby earning PAL for the current school year. The DoD Fresh does not add PAL to the SFA account; it simply diverts some of the SFA’s allocated PAL to the DoD Fresh. The Ohio Department of Education, Office of Integrated Student Supports provides the DoD the PAL for the SFA to use within the DoD Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Program.

When a SFA chooses to participate in the DoD Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Program, the SFA places its order through the DoD Fresh Fruits and Vegetables Order Receipt System (FFAVORS). The DoD chooses the vendors participating in the program and has oversight of the program.
